Out-of-town program in Coimbra

The Queer Lisboa touring programme continues with a stop in Coimbra next Thursday, 16 July. There will be two screenings at the Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente, accompanied by presentations and informal discussions. The two films being screened will be the opening and closing films of last year’s festival.

At 6.30 pm, “Between Goodbyes” will be screened, a documentary by director Jota Mun, which tells the story of Mieke, a Korean queer woman adopted and raised in the Netherlands, and her birth mother, Okgyun, who was forced to give her up for adoption due to cultural stigma and financial difficulties. Following the screening of what was the closing film of Queer Lisboa 29, there will be a discussion with Cristina Migliore, a PhD student in Feminist Studies and a member of GPS-CES, the Sexualities Research Group at CES — the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra.

At 9.30 pm, there will be a screening of the feature film by American director Carmen Emmi, "Plainclothes" (pictured above), the opening film of Queer Lisboa in 2025. The story is set in the 1990s, in the quiet town of Syracuse in upstate New York. Lucas (played by Tom Blyth) is a young police officer whose daily routine involves setting up ambushes for gay men in the toilets of a shopping centre, where he meets Andrew (Russell Tovey), with whom he falls in love. In this instance, the post-film discussion will be led by Ana Cristina Santos, a researcher at CES — the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra.
